Music magic

Meet Piper Grant, the 15-year-old singer/songwriter who has big dreams and music in her heart.

When did you fall in love with music?

I first fell in love with music when I was about seven. I’ve grown up listening to 70s/80s rock since day one – thanks to my father – and I honestly feel that has seriously contributed to what I do today. I remember viewing an impactful music video when I was about six and that’s probably when I started to love the idea of performing live. I began learning guitar around the age of nine; and started singing and writing music at about 10 or 11.

How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my music as a mixture of genres – I try to put my heart and soul into what I create. I believe as long as I continue making music, the sound will keep changing as I go through different eras of my life.

What is your artistic process?

When I’m writing a song I will generally begin with writing the lyrics. From there, I will play around with chords or software that fits the song the best. I’ll often be on the road, or somewhere away from home where I don’t have my guitar with me, so I end up writing a whole song in my notes app. When I return to my guitar I put the words to music and write the lyrics out on tangible paper.

What inspires you?

I am currently finding inspiration in other’s art & music. I listen to Spotify endlessly – and I am always finding new music that encourages me to keep creating my own music too. I find inspiration in many specific things, such as emotions, personal thoughts, life stories, and history.

What has been your favourite memory during your music career so far?

There are so many, I could go on forever. The standout highlight of my musical career so far has been performing live in general. Releasing music onto streaming platforms is a privilege, however, there is something so intimate about sharing my music with people in the real time. I feel so honoured to have the opportunity to gift my voice to my audience – and I hope I can do it for the rest of my life. There are moments I have on stage such as telling an impromptu joke, or a heartfelt story, that I cannot portray through previously recorded music online. I am so grateful for people who are keeping live music alive.

What do you do when you feel creatively blocked?

When I am feeling creatively blocked, I usually let it run its course and I will not write music until I am re-inspired to do so. I like making lists of things I could write about- that helps me start thinking and getting into the zone again. As much as it doesn’t often happen, it is a very uncomfortable feeling to not be able to do what I love, and I hope the block passes quickly.

What is next for you and your craft?

Hopefully, I will play larger festivals & concerts, along with releasing my EP which is on its way. When my platform grows a bit more I plan on going on a New Zealand tour, with hopes of an Australian one sometime in the future too. I hope to collaborate with a few artists I have been in touch with recently – and I can guarantee I have some pretty special things up my sleeve!

Do you have any advice for other young people looking to pursue their music dreams?

The music industry is both challenging and rewarding. I believe it is extremely important to remain humble and grounded as you dive into this career – and to know what you want. Make music that brings you joy, and from there it will bring joy to others too.

When you’re not creating art, what do you like to do for fun?

Music definitely takes up a lot of my thoughts, and even more so since I am home schooled and I have a relatively flexible schedule. When I am not doing something related to music (which, I realised, is rare) I am usually writing a book or a screenplay, sailing, or studying. As much as I would love to commit all my time to my career I am still 15 and I have workbooks to complete.

What is your favourite artist right now and why?

I am thoroughly enjoying researching the careers of Florence + the Machine, Genevieve Stokes, Tyler, the Creator, Sarah Kinsley, Kate Bush, Drake, and Noah Cyrus. They all appeal to me for separate reasons – some being their stage presence is impressive, and some being I simply enjoy their music and I am inspired by their art. I recognise I still have so much to learn, and so far to grow. I am extremely excited to see where music takes me.
